Biography of Martin Heidegger Martin Heidegger was a philosopher engaged most deeply in ontology, the nature and study of being. His central work, Being and Time (1927), investigates being (Sein in German) using a phenomenological analysis of human existence (Dasein) through such human themes as mortality, anxiety, temporality, and historicity. During the 1930s and 1940s, however, he changed his focus (in what Heidegger scholars call “die Kehre,” the turn) to the role language plays as the vehicle through which the question of being is unfolded. His questions shifted from being in the world to doing time in the world. And he found modern Western society wanting in this doing of time. He criticized technological culture as inherently nihilistic. He came under the influence of Edmund Husserl and completed his doctorate in 1913. Conscripted into the army at the start of World War I in 1914, he was soon discharged because of his dangerous health. In 1915, he was appointed a Privatdozent, lecturer at Freiburg, teaching Aristotelian and scholastic philosophy. In 1916, he joined the Freiburg faculty as a junior colleague of Edmund Husserl, married one of his students, served briefly in the German military meteorological service, and returned to Freiburg immediately after the war. He later claimed that he believed he could use this post to influence the course of the Nazi Party, so he joined the party on May 3. On May 27, in his inaugural rectoral address, he seemed to express frank support for Hitler, and, during his rectorship, he made several speeches in support of the party—only to resign as rector on April 23, 1934, and withdraw from politics entirely. His work became vaguely anti-Nazi after this point, and in 1944, the university sought to humiliate him by sending him to the Rhine to dig trenches. After the war, only his original support for the Nazis was remembered, and he was not only dismissed as chair of the Freiburg philosophy department in 1946 but barred from teaching. This ban was lifted in 1949. The 1930s were fateful for another reason, as Heidegger underwent “the turn” (die Kehre) and began to devote himself to philosophical and literary explanation in search of “the essence of truth.” He became increasingly interested in Nietzsche as part of his rejection of traditional Western metaphysics and then sought a rebirth of modern philosophy by going back to its pre-Socratic roots.
